After 30 years on this planet, I finally became a weight lifter. Yes, me – a grown woman throwing around iron in the gym. Can you believe it?! I can’t either. But I love it, absolutely love it. There’s nothing like feeling strong and dead lifting your own body weight. It’s amazing.
My trainer (as most do) really emphasized the importance of protein for building muscle mass. As a plant-based eater, I was definitely diverse enough to be already getting the daily recommended value of 46g a day. Contrary to popular belief, you don’t actually need to eat meat to get to that level. Between my quinoa, veggie, and leafy green intake, it all adds up really fast! But in order to help boost my work at the gym, it seemed being more near the 70g mark was more optimal. So how was I going to work in an extra 24g of protein a day?
First, I tried eating extremely pure organic eggs I bought from my local BiRite Market. But unfortunately they caused two nasty cystic pimples on my chin that didn’t go away for two weeks. Yikes. Turns our, eggs are on a list of common allergens and perhaps after years of not eating them, my body was not down for it. Whey protein is all the rage with most gym rats, but whey is dairy-derived, and I’m not going near cow’s milk with a 10 foot pole. I know how that turns out
That’s when I started exploring plant-based proteins. Increasingly popular amongst the health-conscious community, my local co-op was brimming with beautiful, veggie filled proteins. Having taste buds that are sensitive to too much green taste in my smoothies, I had to find one that not only satisfied my nutritional desires but my appetite as well. After all, if you don’t like what you’re eating, how long will you really keep consuming it?
That’s when I met Garden of Life’s Organic Raw Protein. Packing 17g of protein and containing a boat load of skin boosting micro nutrients, this dairy-free, soy-free, plant-based, organic baby became my breakfast’s new best friend! With a few goodies from Trader Joe’s, I was able to have on hand a quick and easy protein smoothie that tasted so amazing, I actually CRAVED it. Ready to give it a try yourself? Here goes!
Vegan Vanilla Fruit Protein Shake
1c unsweetened vanilla almond milk
1c frozen fruit of your choice
1 scoop Garden of Life Organic Raw Protein, vanilla flavor
Blend and enjoy. It’s just that simple. Add some spinach for an extra green protein boost and in 5 minutes, you have made a tasty beverage to provide 25-33% of your daily recommended protein, gym rat or not! Need even more? Throw two scoops in that sucker and you’re nearing 40g of protein per shake. That’s some seriously good stuff your body and your stomach will love. A win win all around!
