For many of us who have or are struggling with acne, considering a natural approach isn’t typically always the first option we think of. Our culture has taught us that acne is a disease that should be treated topically or through prescription medications. If this is effective, why are 50 million Americans still suffering?
When I was a teenager, I suffered from breakouts. My parents and I visited a dermatologist and I was prescribed creams and antibiotics. The creams dried my skin out so badly, I stopped using them and went back to breakouts. And the antibiotics did my body no favors. At no point did anyone ever tell me that my diet and stress might have something to do with my skin. In fact in the medical community, it seemed frowned on to make any kind of dietary connection to medical disease or suffering.
So I spent 10 years of my life battling breakouts with a plethora of lotions and topicals, benzoyl peroxides and salicylic acids. It helped, sure. But it wasn’t comfortable nor did it really solve the problem. It was only by accident that I ended up discovering the profound effect that diet and stress was having on my own skin.
I saw huge changes in my skin in just a matter of weeks. From there, it took me about a year to fully undo the acne combination lock and naturally clear my skin (mostly because I had to figure it all out on my own). But what was one year compared to TEN trying to treat it the “conventional” way? Topical/rX acne treatment is a quick fix rather than a long-term solution. I know what the desire is like to want acne to go away immediately, but scratching that itch and getting immediate gratification of a few pimples gone doesn’t mean others will not follow. In fact, they usually keep on coming and we keep getting frustrated with the battle of our skin – unless we can stop what is feeding and causing our breakouts in the first place. I don’t want that for you. I want you to have clear, beautiful skin for life!
Going a natural route isn’t always immediate. It can take work, mindfulness, and dedication. But I can tell you that it does in fact work and is 100% WORTH IT! To be able to feel my smooth skin and not fear the sunlight reflecting off it has done more for my self esteem than having to deal with those creams and live in the shadows. If you’re considering fighting for natural skin care, know that there is help! If you’re committed to change, magical things can happen and you’ll look and feel better than ever before. If you’re lost, reach out for some guidance! You don’t have to spend years figuring out your acne triggers when there are people out here to help.
